“Science is an Open
Box”
In the TedTalk
“How Simple Ideas Lead to Scientific Discoveries” by Adam Savage, he discusses
how a little curiosity can change the way one thinks about life and about the
world. He also mentions how there are
different fields in science and how that is a wonderful thing because it is an
example of how science is an “open box and we are all explorers.” Savage also mentions how past discoverers
relied on their eyes, ears, and brain, in order to make these discoveries that
future generations were able to build on.
He ends the presentation by emphasizing the importance of feeding ones’ curiosity
and how it can lead to great findings that will change the world.
This TedTalk
video has allowed me to consider all the possibilities of the world and to not
close myself off to them. There is still
so much undiscovered territory and without [curious] individuals who seek
answers to their own questions the world will not continue to evolve and
thrive. Adam Savage has provided many
thought provoking points on how to understand a difficult concept and how going
back to the individual who discovered the concept would be beneficial. This exercise of thinking is important
because it allows you to consider the ideas and questions with a different set
of eyes or better yet as the inventor did.
The ability to adapt to new ways of thinking paves the pathway to new
discoveries.
